Botox Injections - The Benefits of Botox
What is Botox?
Botox and other similar neuromodulators such at Nuceiva, Dysport and Xeomin are purified complex proteins used to lessen or eliminate unwanted wrinkles. The specific protein, Botulinum Toxin – type A, is a mild neurotoxin which temporarily blocks nerve signals, preventing muscles from contracting leading to muscle relaxation and softening of wrinkles. All of these neuromodulators are approved by Health Canada.
Botox has become increasingly common to help keep skin smooth and present a refreshed look. With treatment, specific superficial and deep muscles are targeted. Common areas include horizontal lines on the forehead, angry lines between the eyes, and wrinkles around the eyes which are more commonly known as ‘crow’s feet’. Botox can also be used medically to treat TMJ pain and migraines.
Wrinkles are a natural part of the aging process and poor skin care habits, excessive unprotected sun exposure, smoking and genetics all play key roles in the progression of wrinkles.
Initially, wrinkles are ‘dynamic’, meaning they appear only with facial movements. Over time, and with repetition, these ‘dynamic’ wrinkles start to become ‘static’, meaning they are present even without facial movements. These ‘static’ or permanent wrinkles progress to become deeper and more defined resulting in a tired and aged look. Treatment with neuromodulators such as Botox can help smooth the skin and help prevent the formation of and in some cases, reverse static wrinkles.
Treatment takes about 30 mins and there is no down time. The effects will typically start to show in 5-7 days with maximal effect achieved in 10-14 days. In most cases, the effects will last about 3 months after which muscle activity is gradually returns back to normal. To keep the desired effect, regular maintenance is required.
Conclusion: Why Choose Botox Over Cosmetic Surgery?
Treatment with neuromodulators such as Botox and Nuceiva are approved by Health Canada, and are a safe, minimally invasive method to prevent and treat wrinkles. The cosmetic surgery alternative is much more invasive and involves cutting the skin and redistributing tissues. Surgery carries an increased risk of infection.
